During Sectional play, Valor College Prep was locked in a defensive battle with their opponent, Madison Magnet. The Lady Wildcats managed to attack the Madison defense with 8 shots on goal in the first half, however, no goals were allowed. The second half was back and forth for a while, but Madison Magnet held possession most of the half. Brooke Ashworth, the Valor goalie, saved several shots as Valor managed to allow no goals and go into OT deadlocked at 0-0. Throughout the 20 minute overtime period, both goalies withstood attacking offenses and carried their teams into penalty kicks as OT dealt no scores. During penalty kicks, the Wildcats and Mustangs traded goals until backup goalie and star striker Carys Correnti made a big save, followed by an amazing shot to the top right corner of the net. This put the Wildcats up in PK’s 4-3 with one player left to kick for either team. Madison Magnet scored, but Lily McGowan finished off the Mustangs, making VCP’s last penalty kick. The Lady Wildcats won 1-0, (5-4 in penalty kicks) to advance to the state tournament. Coach Telang stated that all of the players had a specific role and that everyone met that role to help the Wildcats win. Valor plays on Friday at 1:30 at Richard Siegel Park in Murfreesboro.
